‘I always felt Donald Trump loved me’ – USWNT icon Megan Rapinoe opens up on feud with former U.S. president and post-retirement plans

Megan Rapinoe, the star of the U.S. women’s national team, expressed her belief that former President Donald Trump had a fondness for her during their public disagreement.

  • Rapinoe discusses her feud with Trump and believes that the former president always “loved” her. The USWNT star recently announced her retirement this week.

During the 2019 Women’s World Cup, Megan Rapinoe stated that she would not visit the White House if the USWNT won the tournament. In response, Donald Trump tweeted, “WIN first before she TALKS.” Despite this, Rapinoe and her teammates went on to become world champions and chose not to visit the White House afterwards.

WHAT THEY SAID: In an interview with TIME, Rapinoe talked about Trump and her status as a polarizing sportsperson, too. “You know he was watching that game,” she said. “You know he had his McDonald’s lined up and he was probably like, ‘You know what, I love that.’ I always felt Trump loved me.

“I’m exactly what they’re familiar and comfortable with, just packaged up differently. But I’m exactly the brash, arrogant athlete that Americans love.”

The forward, who recently announced her retirement, has plans for the next phase of her life. She expresses her desire to use her privilege and platform to make a positive impact on the world. She intends to do so with determination and persistence.

Rapinoe has a few more months left to play before leaving the pitch. She is currently part of the USWNT roster aiming to win their third consecutive World Cup trophy, which has never been achieved before by any country. Additionally, there is the club season to finish, and it would be a dream come true for Rapinoe and OL Reign to win the NWSL Championship before her departure.

The USWNT recently had a send-off friendly against Wales and will now be traveling to New Zealand for the World Cup. Their first match is scheduled for July 21st against Vietnam.
