Novak Djokovic won his 100th Wimbledon match by defeating Hubert Hurkacz in four sets. This victory has allowed him to equal Jimmy Connors’ record for the number of Wimbledon quarter-finals reached. In the upcoming match on Tuesday, Djokovic will face Russia’s seventh seed, Andrey Rublev.
Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion, has reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the 14th time. His victory against Hubert Hurkacz was delayed due to a curfew, but he managed to win the match in four sets.
Novak Djokovic, a 36-year-old Serbian tennis player, was leading Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz by two sets when play was suspended on Sunday night.
Pole tennis player Hubert Hurkacz won the third set, however, Novak Djokovic quickly responded and won the match with a score of 7-6 (7-6), 7-6 (7-6), 5-7, 6-4. As a result, Djokovic secured his spot in the quarter-finals where he will face Andrey Rublev from Russia.
He praised Hubert for his exceptional performance in the match and expressed sympathy for his tough luck.
He said: “Big credit to Hubert for playing an amazing match, tough luck for him. he put up a great performance.
“Honestly, I don’t recall the last time I felt this miserable on returning games, due to his incredibly accurate and powerful serve.
“He’s got one of the best serves in the world and it’s so difficult to read it. Playing on the quickest surface it really favours the big servers so it was not really an enjoyable match for me.
“But I guess in the important moments last night I was fortunate to win the first set. This match could definitely have gone a different way but I held my nerve and I’m happy to win.”
Djokovic had been in control of his service games, not allowing any break points in his previous 53 games. However, in this particular game, Hurkacz managed to force two break points at 6-5. Unfortunately for Djokovic, he made an error and dumped the second break point into the net.
Hubert Hurkacz, who had not faced a break point since the second set 17 hours ago, successfully defended against two break points at 3-3 in the fourth set. However, he slipped on the baseline at deuce, allowing Novak Djokovic to convert the third break point.
Hurkacz had his first serve drop in the Championships, which was enough for the 23-time Grand Slam champion to advance.
“He’s a different player to Hurkacz, for sure,” added Djokovic. “He’s got very powerful, quick groundstrokes, stays close to the line and has one of the best forehands in the game, loves to dictate… I’m not going to talk too much about tactics.
“I have to be ready. The matches are only going to get harder. It’s tough to say it’s going to get harder than what I experienced yesterday and today, but I have to be ready for that.
“Rublev has been a top-10 player for many years and he’s looking for his first semi-finals at a grand slam. Hopefully it’s not gonna happen.”
