Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has praised Bruno Fernandes as a “great inspiration” and revealed that he has chosen him as the team’s new captain.
Bruno Fernandes has been named captain of Manchester United for the upcoming season. He took over the captain’s armband from Harry Maguire, who had trouble securing a regular starting position.
Ten Hag considers him a role model and an inspiration for his teammates. The coach sees him as a leader who helps shape and strengthen the team.
A good team consists of individuals who fulfill different roles such as leaders, team players, multi-functional players, specialists, and individualists. Team leaders play a crucial role in guiding and building the team, as well as ensuring the quality of performance. Bruno was chosen as a team leader because he serves as a great inspiration and sets an example for others.
“He always wants to be a better football player, working very hard to give his maximum performance. So he is the mirror for many players and he is a good social connector. He is also very good at game understanding. So, for a manager, it’s very good to have that intermediary on the pitch. So those are some reasons, but he can’t do it alone. We need more help. We need more leaders to have a strong bond and who can point a team in the right direction,” he added.
Ten Hag has commented on the situation regarding Maguire being stripped of the captaincy. The coach emphasized that Maguire is still valuable to the team, but he will need to compete for his position.
“We respect Harry. Harry’s very important for this squad, for this team. And, you know, in his role as centre-back, we have four centre-backs. I talked about consistency and we know we can’t do it with 11 players and so I’m happy we have four very good centre-backs. And we will need them, and he has to fight for his place, as he did last year. He has a high potential so I’m sure he will do it, he will fight for his place and then it’s up to him,” he said.
Fernandes is set to make his debut as the full-time captain of Manchester United against Arsenal on Saturday.
