Belgian GP: Lewis Hamilton addresses issue of self-doubt during Mercedes Formula 1 struggles

In 2022, Lewis Hamilton experienced a significant milestone in his career as he failed to secure a race victory for the first time. However, he managed to break this dry spell by securing pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking his first pole since December 2021.

Lewis Hamilton is feeling hopeful and motivated as he discusses the positive changes to Mercedes’ 2023 car and how they are helping him unleash his full potential. Despite recent challenges, Hamilton remains focused and determined.

In the 2022 season, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes faced challenges due to new design regulations, resulting in their first winless season as Red Bull and Max Verstappen took the spotlight.

In the 2021 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton faced a rare defeat to his teammate, and George Russell secured Mercedes’ sole victory of the year in his debut season with the team.

In 2023, Hamilton has shown impressive performance despite Mercedes struggling to match Red Bull’s pace. He recently secured his first pole position since December 2021 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hamilton was asked if he had doubts about recapturing his best form during a lean run, to which he responded that it was a personal question he didn’t want to delve into.

“Last year was difficult with the car we’ve had, and particularly just not finding myself gelling with the car that we had built, and therefore just not being able to live at the potential that I know I’m able to compete at.

“When you’re hindered with the balance, and that’s similar for so many drivers.”

Mercedes struggled at the beginning of the 2023 season, prompting Hamilton to publicly criticize the team for not following his development advice.

The team made major changes, with James Allison returning as technical director and abandoning the zero-sidepod concept pursued since the start of 2022.

Hamilton has seen positive results after the introduction of upgrades to the W14, finishing in the top four in five out of six Grands Prix.

“The goal is to steer the direction of the development so that you can eventually show your potential and what you’re capable of,” Hamilton said on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

“Through really hard work I think we’re starting to get there, and I think you’ve started to see that, particularly from Monaco onwards, I’ve had much more consistent performances, and then the pole position we had in the last race, really felt very reminiscent of the olden days for me.

“So that gives me hope that we are going in the right direction, hopefully the same for our team.”
