Al Nassr has officially signed Bayern Munich striker Sadio Mane, who will now join forces with Cristiano Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
The two-time African footballer of the year has recently joined the lucrative Saudi league, becoming the latest high-profile player to do so.
“I’m really happy to be part of you guys, I can’t wait to see you,” Mane said in a video addressed to Al Nassr supporters on the club’s social media accounts.
In a significant transfer deal, the former Liverpool star has joined a new club for an estimated fee of 30 million euros. Mane has signed a three-year contract with an annual salary of 40 million euros, along with additional bonuses based on performance.
Mane expressed regret over leaving Bayern with two years left on his contract.
“Leaving Bayern hurts me. I would have wished for a different ending,” he told Sky Germany.
Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel expressed similar views during an event in Singapore before his team’s friendly match against Liverpool.
“We had a long, big hug and we both agreed that we don’t like what’s happening now, but we think it’s for the best in this situation,” said the Bayern coach.
“Sometimes things don’t work out as everybody wants it to work out. In person I have always had a very good relationship with him and this will stay.
“I can totally understand that he feels hurt and I also wouldn’t feel happy if things like this happened.
“Obviously it’s something that we didn’t bring into the full potential, which is my job and my responsibility, but in this particular situation, it was the best solution to untie the knot.”
Ronaldo signs a four-year contract with Mane’s club, marking the first signing in a series made by Saudi clubs.
Mane had a successful career at Liverpool, winning both the Champions League and Premier League in six seasons. He formed a formidable attacking trio with Salah and Firmino under Jurgen Klopp’s management.
Liverpool’s victory in the 2019-2020 season marked their first English league title in 30 years, during which Mane scored 18 goals.
Mane sought a new challenge in the summer of 2022, as rumors circulated that he grew tired of sharing the spotlight with Salah at Anfield.
Bayern made a move for Mane, offering him a prominent role in their attack after losing Lewandowski to Barcelona.
Mane struggled to adapt at Bayern Munich despite a promising start to the season.
Mane suffered a fibula injury during a Bundesliga game against Werder Bremen, resulting in him missing the World Cup and negatively impacting Senegal’s chances.
Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of Bayern, discussed Mane’s challenging time in Germany.
“It certainly wasn’t an easy year for him, getting injured just before the World Cup and being unable to take part in it with Senegal,” he told Bayern’s website.
Dreesen added: “Because of his long lay-off he also couldn’t have the impact at FC Bayern that we all and he himself had hoped for.
“That’s why we came to the joint decision that he’ll begin a new chapter in his career and make a new start at a different club.”
In 2023, Mane returned to Bayern but faced difficulties as he got into a physical altercation with teammate Leroy Sane after a Champions League loss to Manchester City.
Bayern fines Mane β¬350,000 and suspends him for one match.
The player’s performance in the season was disappointing, scoring only 12 goals in 38 games.
Al Nassr has made several signings this summer, including Ronaldo, Marcelo Brozovic, Alex Telles, and Seko Fofana.
Several high-profile football players have recently made moves to Saudi Arabian clubs.Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante joined Al-Ittihad, while Riyad Mahrez joined Al-Ahli.
In a recent move, England international Jordan Henderson left Liverpool to join Al-Ettifaq. It is worth noting that he will now be coached by his former teammate and Reds legend, Steven Gerrard.
