Dan Evans won the Citi Open in Washington, claiming the biggest title of his career, with a victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the final.

A 33-year-old from Birmingham won his first ATP 500 crown, overcoming a high-flying opponent and a rain delay with a 7-5 6-3 victory, marking his second Tour victory.

British tennis player achieves victory in the capital, becoming the first Briton to win the title since 2003. This triumph propels him to the 21st position in the ATP rankings, marking a new career high for him.

“I wasn’t playing very well and I wasn’t happy with my game. To do the work I’ve done and to stick with it and come through is [amazing],” said Evans. “The last game sort of summed up my week. I got out of trouble and it was an amazing week. I really appreciate all the support.”

In the match, Griekspoor maintained his serve and successfully saved two break points in the fourth game, displaying his strong defensive skills.

Evans held to love to lead 5-4 and had to change his racket during the next game after breaking a string.

In a gripping tennis match, Griekspoor saves a set point with a powerful ace, ultimately bringing the score to a tie at 5-5.

In the final, Griekspoor faced Evans and found himself in a tough situation after losing points on his serve.

In a 50-minute match, Griekspoor’s mistake allowed the British player to win the opening set by hitting the ball into the net.

The match between Evans and his opponent was momentarily interrupted by rain when the score was tied at 1-1 in the second set. However, play quickly resumed without either player leaving the court.

Swedish umpire Mohamed Lahyani had to intervene due to drizzling weather conditions during a tennis match, much to the frustration of player Evans who had to wait.

I mentioned that Griekspoor leveled the game with his serve, but play was interrupted due to a lightning warning in the vicinity.

Play was suspended again before 6.30pm local time, with spectators having to leave the stadium.

The players and spectators returned to the court after a delay of over 90 minutes, and Evans continued his performance from where he had left off.

Tallon dominated the match, easily winning his remaining service games and dictating play on return. He only faced a break point in his final game on serve.

Evans saved four break point opportunities and secured victory with a service winner in a nerve-wracking match.

Evans emerged victorious in the event after a series of defeats, winning 10 consecutive sets and defeating top players such as Tiafoe and Dimitrov.

Evans claims his first ATP title since Melbourne 2021.
