FIFA has provisionally suspended the president of the Spanish FA, Luis Rubiales, for 90 days due to his conduct after the Women’s World Cup final. Rubiales and the Spanish FA have been instructed not to contact Jenni Hermoso or anyone associated with her. In response to this, the Spanish players have refused to participate in any further matches until Rubiales is removed from his position.
FIFA has provisionally suspended Luis Rubiales, the Spanish Football Federation president, due to his conduct during the women’s World Cup final.
Rubiales refuses to resign despite uproar over kissing incident.
FIFA has instructed the Spanish FA and its president, Rubiales, not to engage with the World Cup winner or anyone associated with her. The player, Hermoso, has denounced the federation for fostering a culture of manipulation, hostility, and control.
Rubiales is being investigated by FIFA, but there has been no comment from UEFA, where he holds a vice-president position and earns €250,000 per year.
The player, Hermoso, stated that she did not give consent to the kiss. In response, her country’s football federation (RFEF) expressed their intention to take legal action regarding the comments made by the forward concerning Rubiales.
Rubiales, amid the kiss scandal, refuses to step down and accuses “false feminists” of launching a witch-hunt against him in an impassioned speech before the Spanish football federation.
The statement caused a strong reaction from Hermoso and her teammates, leading them to announce their decision to refuse playing for Spain in the future, despite their recent victory in the World Cup.
The 33-year-old forward denied giving consent to a kiss in a statement on Friday night.
Rubiales accused Hermoso of lying about him forcibly kissing her.
The Spanish football federation released a statement with images of Hermoso being lifted by Rubiales.
“Mr President’s feet are ostensibly lifted from the ground as a result of the player’s action,” the statement said.
“The tests are conclusive. Mr President has not lied.
“The RFEF and Mr President will demonstrate each of the lies that are spread either by someone on behalf of the player or, if applicable, by the player herself.”
Hermoso’s statement, as quoted by Futpro, the players’ union representing her, denied seeking to raise the president in any way.
England Women expressed their support for Spain’s victory in the World Cup final, as conveyed by their captain, Leah Williamson.
“Unacceptable actions allowed to happen by a sexist and patriarchal organisation. Abuse is abuse and we have all seen the truth,” it read.
“The behaviour of those who think they are invincible must not be tolerated and people shouldn’t need convincing to take action against any form of harassment.
“We all stand with you, @jennihermoso and all players of the Spanish team.”
A group of approximately 100 people, primarily women, gathered outside the Spanish Soccer Federation’s headquarters in Madrid, demanding the resignation of Rubiales. The protesters held red cards as a symbol of their dissatisfaction.
