Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has been charged with improper conduct and could face an extended suspension after receiving a red card in the match against Newcastle on Sunday.
Liverpool secured a sensational 2-1 Premier League victory against Newcastle at St James’ Park, thanks to Darwin Nunez’s two goals off the bench. Despite being reduced to 10 men with Van Dijk’s early red card, Liverpool displayed resilience and determination to claim the win.
Liverpool captain was red-carded after fouling Alexander Isak on the edge of the box, with VAR supporting the referee’s decision.
The defender caused a delay in the restart of play by not promptly leaving the field and confronting the fourth official, Craig Pawson.
Van Dijk is accused of behaving improperly and may have used abusive and insulting language towards a match official after being shown a red card in the 29th minute.
Van Dijk, a Netherlands international, has been charged and has until Friday to respond. He will miss Liverpool’s next Premier League match against Aston Villa and may also miss the following game against Wolves if his ban is extended.
