Manchester United have signed Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon on loan to address their left-back problems due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Reguilon’s last appearance for Spurs was in April 2022.
Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon has joined Manchester United on loan, according to Erik ten Hag. Reguilon trained with the club on Friday and is expected to be available for the upcoming match against Arsenal.
In his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Arsenal, Ten Hag said: “Reguilon is here, he trained.”
Asked if the Spain international would be available to face the Gunners, the United boss said: “Yes.”
“He’s very experienced,” added Ten Hag. “Played for big clubs, played a lot of games in LaLiga and Premier League.
“He has a very good background. We’ve seen he can play intense football and we are happy.
“We had a problem with (Luke]) Shaw and (Tyrell) Malacia and I think we responded very well to that emergency situation.”
Injuries to Shaw and Malacia have left Ten Hag with a shortage of left-back options, forcing him to deploy right-back Diogo Dalot in that position.
Sergio Reguilon has been out of action for Tottenham since April 2022. He spent the previous season on loan at Atletico Madrid, playing in 11 LaLiga games.
After completing his move to Old Trafford, Reguilon said: “In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.
“Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.
“I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities.”
Manchester United football director John Murtough added: “Once it became clear that we needed to bring in another left-back we assessed a number of targets and acted quickly to sign Sergio. He possesses all the required qualities to help us achieve our aims this season.
“He has good experience in both the Premier League and in European competitions, so he is ready to come into the squad and perform straight away.”
