Novak Djokovic makes an impressive comeback from two sets down at the US Open to secure a spot in the last 16, setting up a match against Croatia’s Borna Gojo.
Novak Djokovic made an impressive comeback, winning against Laslo Djere in a thrilling late-night match at the US Open.
Djokovic overcame a slow start and successfully staged a comeback to defeat Djere, the world No 38, in a thrilling match that ended late at night. The final score was 4-6 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-3.
Novak Djokovic demonstrated his incredible resilience by coming back from a two-set deficit for the eighth time in his career, securing a victory and improving his five-set match record to 38-11. This remarkable feat resembled his memorable comeback against Roger Federer at the US Open 12 years ago.
Novak Djokovic, 36, is aiming to win his 24th Grand Slam, in order to match Margaret Court’s all-time record. He will be facing Croatian player Borna Gojo in the next round.
“It was one of the toughest matches that I have played here in many years and huge, huge credit to Laslo for playing some of the best tennis that I’ve ever seen him play,” said Djokovic, who advanced through to the fourth round in New York for the 15th time in his career.
“I did a little pep talk in the mirror. I kind of laughed at myself because I was so agitated and annoyed with the game but I had to force myself to lift my spirits. I’ve done it a few times in my career before and it worked, a few times it didn’t, but tonight it did and I’m grateful.”
In a stunning display of fearlessness, Djere took an early lead against one of the greatest players of all-time on the prestigious Arthur Ashe Stadium. The crowd was left in shock as Djere took a two-set lead.
Djokovic had opportunities but failed to capitalize on them until he was pushed into a difficult situation.
Djokovic rallied in the third set with a renewed sense of urgency, capitalizing on Djere’s mistakes and applying relentless pressure.
Djokovic made a strong comeback, winning six consecutive games to secure victory in the fourth and final set.
“Once I got the break in the third I thought ‘OK, I have a shot, I have a chance,” said Djokovic. “I might as well go after it.
“I started to play a bit more aggressive, started to read his games slightly more than I had in the first two sets and it worked well.
“But trust me, it was nerve wracking all the way till the last shot,” he added.
