Jelena Ostapenko defeated Iga Swiatek in a remarkable comeback, ending her title defence at the US Open.
Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked player, lost her US Open champion title in a surprising defeat against Jelena Ostapenko.
Swiatek’s defeat marks the end of her 75-week reign as the No. 1 player in the WTA rankings. Next week, Aryna Sabalenka will assume the top spot.
In her first US Open quarter-final, the 2017 French Open champion is set to face American favorite Coco Gauff in the next round.
“I always expect a tough battle against Iga,” Ostapenko said on court. “She’s won many Slams and she plays very consistent. I just went on court and I had to play aggressive because that’s what she doesn’t really like. In the third set, I stepped more in the court and I was serving better.”
“I was just thinking that I have to play until the very last point, until we shake hands,” she added. “I didn’t really give her many chances.”
The first set of the match featured an initial exchange of breaks, with Swiatek ultimately taking the lead. She closed out the set, and things seemed to be going well.
Ostapenko took an early lead in the second set, but Swiatek fought back to level the contest. However, Ostapenko dominated the third set by winning seven consecutive games and ultimately sealed the victory with a powerful forehand winner.
