In the US Open, Aryna Sabalenka is a strong contender for the top spot and has advanced to the quarter-finals. Ons Jabeur, last year’s runner-up, has been eliminated from the tournament by Zheng Qinwen.
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Daria Kasatkina in the US Open fourth round after becoming the new world No 1, winning with a score of 6-1 6-3.
Sabalenka’s victory over Swiatek ensures that she will become the top-ranked player for the first time. However, her primary goal remains winning the tournament and claiming the trophy.
Sabalenka has been a strong contender in the New York tournament, reaching the semi-finals in the past two editions. She will now face Zheng Qinwen in her quest to make it to the last four once again.
In 2021, the Belarusian tennis player achieved remarkable success by winning the Australian Open and making it to the semifinals of both the French Open and Wimbledon.
“I had no doubt that Iga was going to make it to the final. I was sad that she lost, but becoming number one means a lot to me,” said Sabalenka on-court.
“I’ve been pushing myself a lot this year to make this goal and I still can’t believe it… but I didn’t want to be distracted for tonight.”
Zheng achieved her best-ever performance in a Grand Slam tournament by defeating Jabeur 6-2 6-4 and securing a spot in the quarter-finals.
Chinese player Zheng makes history as the first to reach the US Open quarterfinals since 2019.
In her impressive display, she defeated the fifth-seeded Tunisian with her powerful baseline game, hitting 21 winners.
“I feel just super happy and excited to play in a big stadium and have a really good performance today,” the 20-year-old Zheng told the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd.
Madison Keys defeated Jessica Pegula 6-1 6-3 in just over an hour, securing her place in the quarter-finals.
Keys, the 17th seed and 2017 runner-up, easily defeated her close friend and third-seeded opponent at Flushing Meadows.
In the upcoming quarter-finals, the ninth-seeded Marketa Vondrousova will face off against her opponent after making a comeback win against the unseeded American Peyton Stearns. Vondrousova continues to pursue her goal of winning a second consecutive Grand Slam title following her recent triumph at Wimbledon.
“I actually didn’t expect it after Wimby, there was a lot of pressure,” Vondrousova said afterwards. “Let’s see what happens next.”
