Carlos Alcaraz advances to US Open quarter-finals, Medvedev to face Rublev in close-friend matchup.
Carlos Alcaraz swiftly defeated Matteo Arnaldi 6-3 6-3 6-4 to advance to the US Open quarter-finals.
Alcaraz played solidly against an opponent making his Flushing Meadows debut under a closed roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Alcaraz quickly assessed his opponent and dominated the game.
Alcaraz quickly took control of the match by breaking serve for a 4-2 lead in the first set and then breaking again at the beginning of the second set to go up 2-0.
The young Italian player showed some resistance in the third set, breaking his opponent once, but the Spaniard quickly responded and ultimately secured the win.
“I think the intensity from the beginning until the last ball pleased me,” said the 20-year-old Wimbledon champion.
“I played a really solid match, less mistakes, I played my game. I’m really happy with the performance.”
Alcaraz will face Zverev in the next round after Zverev’s five-set victory over Sinner.
In a thrilling match, Zverev emerged as the victor against his opponent, winning in five sets. The intense encounter was marred by a fan who was subsequently ejected from the stadium for making inappropriate comments towards Zverev.
In the US Open singles, Andrey Rublev, the eighth seed, defeated Jack Draper in four sets, ending British hopes.
Rublev, a Russian tennis player, will be playing against his close friend Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Medvedev fought back from a set down to defeat Alex de Minaur and secure his spot in the next round.
“I think we’re really close friends,” said Medvedev. “We have great relationship. Even if on the court we’re big competitors, I think nothing is going to come between us to separate us in real life.
“It’s great to have someone like this on tour because sometimes it can be not easy. You travel, travel, travel. To have a friend like this is great. But on the court we both want to win. We’re not going to be friends in two days.”
