US Open: Coco Gauff defeats Iga Swiatek’s conqueror Jelena Ostapenko to reach semi-finals

Coco Gauff makes history by becoming the first American teenager to reach the US Open semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2001. She secured her spot with a remarkable victory against Jelena Ostapenko.

Coco Gauff, an American teenager, advanced to the US Open semi-finals after defeating Jelena Ostapenko with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Coco Gauff, the young tennis prodigy, showcased her impressive skills at the US Open. With a successful lead-up to the tournament, including hardcourt titles in Washington and Cincinnati, Gauff dominated her opponent, converting the majority of her break points and only dropping serve once. The match lasted just 67 minutes on a sunny day at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 19-year-old American teenager has become the first of her kind to reach the final four at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 2001.

“It feels great, I’m so happy,” said Gauff. “Last year I lost in the quarter-finals and I wanted to do better. There’s a long way to go but I’m happy and ready to go back to work.

“Honestly, I didn’t feel comfortable the whole match, even on match point. I know the game she plays. It’s really tough against her – you can’t really be aggressive. She’s a top player and she’s had a great tournament.

“There’s a saying in basketball that ‘defence wins games’. It doesn’t always work in tennis but today that was the case.”

Ostapenko struggled against Gauff, delivering an error-strewn performance following her upset victory over Swiatek.

Coco Gauff dominated the match from the beginning, displaying great court coverage and consistently hitting deep shots. She won the first set in just 20 minutes and limited Ostapenko to only seven points.

Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, faced off against Gauff in the US Open quarter-final. Gauff dominated the match, taking the lead and breaking Ostapenko’s serve. Despite a brief comeback from Ostapenko, Gauff remained strong and swiftly broke back.

In a decisive match that lasted for 68 minutes, the American player managed to secure a comfortable victory by going up a double break and ultimately closing out the game on serve. This triumph served as redemption for her previous loss to the Latvian player in the round of 16 at the Australian Open.

The upcoming opponent for Gauff will be either Karolina Muchova or Sorana Cirstea.
