Virgil van Dijk will be absent from Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match against Wolves. This is due to a one-match ban he received following his red card during the game against Newcastle last month. In addition, the Dutch defender has been fined £100,000 for his misconduct.
Virgil van Dijk, the Liverpool player, has been suspended for one more match and fined £100,000 due to his improper behavior and use of abusive language towards a match official during the game against Newcastle.
The Netherlands international received a red card during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over St James’ Park for a foul on Alexander Isak. He initially refused to leave the pitch and argued with referee John Brooks.
The centre-back, who was initially suspended for one match, will now serve an additional suspension and miss the upcoming game against Wolves.
A statement from the FA read: “Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for one match and fined £100,000 for breaching FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle on Sunday August 27.
“The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission.”
Van Dijk expressed that the incident was uncharacteristic during an interview with Dutch reporters after the Netherlands’ victory over Greece.
“But it was the red card anyway. I’ve never got one before at Liverpool, and I think only about four times in my entire career. But apart from that I still started the season well.”
