Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and Barcelona’s Vitor Roque, along with their fellow Brazil Under-23 teammates, found themselves in a startling situation during their stay in Morocco. The athletes were in the country for an international friendly match against the Moroccan team when an unexpected earthquake struck the region.
Late on Friday evening, an earthquake originating from the Atlas Mountains sent shockwaves through Morocco, resulting in tragic consequences. Over 800 fatalities have been confirmed so far, with hundreds more individuals sustaining injuries. The earthquake’s epicenter was a distance away from Fez, where the team was staying, but the tremors were still felt by all.
The Brazil Under-23 squad, including Santos and Roque, experienced the powerful tremor while inside their hotel rooms. Quick to react, they evacuated their rooms and sought safety in the hotel’s pool area, where they remained until the situation stabilized. Luckily, the team and their staff escaped unharmed, thanks to their prompt response to the alarming event.
The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) swiftly addressed the incident and assured everyone of the team’s safety in a released statement. The CBF statement reassured concerned parties, stating: “The CBF informs that the Brazilian Pre-Olympic Team delegation is safe in Morocco. Athletes and members of the delegation felt the tremor and left their rooms in the hotel in the city of Fez. For safety, they were taken to the hotel pool and returned to their rooms an hour after the earthquake.”
The footballing community at large has expressed heartfelt condolences and support for those affected by the earthquake. It is a tragic reminder of the immense power of nature and the importance of preparedness in such situations. As the recovery efforts continue and the number of casualties is expected to increase, the world stands in solidarity with Morocco during this difficult time.
