Inter Miami, the soccer team based in Miami, suffered a crushing 5-2 defeat against Atlanta United in Major League Soccer on Saturday evening, and they did so without the notable presence of Lionel Messi.
Without Messi’s brilliance, Inter Miami succumbed to a team that demonstrated superiority on the field. The legendary Argentinean footballer had been the catalyst for a 12-game unbeaten streak, and it seemed they could extend that when Leonardo Campana opened the scoring with a spectacular finish after 25 minutes of play. However, Inter Miami went into halftime with a 3-1 deficit, courtesy of goals from Tristan Muyumba and Brooks Lennon, as well as an own goal from Kamal Miller.
Although Campana managed to give the Herons hope by scoring a second goal after the break, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Tyler Wolff extinguished any chances of a comeback.
Following the match, manager Tata Martino revealed that Messi was dealing with “muscle fatigue,” which led him to leave the Argentine national team camp before their match against Bolivia at high altitude. It remains to be seen if Messi will return in time for the upcoming clash against Toronto on Thursday.
Inter Miami will closely monitor Messi’s fitness ahead of the match against Toronto later this week.
