Manchester United suffered a 3-2 defeat at home against Galatasaray in the Champions League. This loss means that United has now lost six out of their first ten matches in all competitions this season. Manager Ten Hag also expressed support for goalkeeper Andre Onana, despite his recent costly mistake.
Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, is not concerned about losing his position despite his team’s poor start to the season. They suffered a home defeat against Galatasaray in the Champions League.
The Dutchman believes that Andre Onana has the potential to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world, despite making another mistake early in his Manchester United career.
Manchester United lost 3-2 at Old Trafford, giving up a 2-1 lead. It was their worst start to a season since 1986.
They have lost six of their first 10 games in 37 years and their chances of advancing past the group stages look uncertain after just two matches.
Everyone at the club is working together to improve, according to Ten Hag, who believes there are no excuses for their poor performances.
Asked whether he feared for his job, the Dutchman said: “Last season: brilliant, terrific, more than we could expect.
“We also knew in this project there would be common gaps. At this moment we are in a very difficult period as everyone can see but we come out together, we are fighting together, we are sticking together and we are behind each other. That is me, the directors, the team, all together we will fight.
“This is not us, we know we have to do better, with togetherness we will come out.
“If I give an explanation, then you will see as excuses, there are no excuses. We can’t make the errors we are now making. We have to do better, it is a simple fact, we have to win our games.”
United had a good chance to win the match after Rasmus Hojlund scored two goals. Wilfried Zaha, who used to play for United, scored to equalize the game.
Kerem Akturkoglu equalized for them again, but a terrible mistake by Onana led to their downfall. His bad pass resulted in Casemiro fouling Dries Mertens in the penalty area, which led to Casemiro being sent off.
Mauro Icardi missed the penalty, but scored the winning goal three minutes later. It was a historic victory for the Turkish team, their first ever on English soil.
Onana also made a big mistake in the first match of Group A against Bayern Munich two weeks ago. But Ten Hag, who used to coach him at Ajax, believes in Onana’s ability to improve.
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group, definitely with Andre,” Ten Hag said. “He was in one semi-final of the Champions League, last year he was in the final of the Champions League, he has the capablilties to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
“He has shown that and he will do. We already have seen in games his great capabilites, also his personality after he made mistakes. He will bounce back and I am sure he will in the coming games as well.”
