Four PSG players handed one-match suspensions for contributing to offensive chants in Ligue 1 clash with Marseille

Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, Layvin Kurzawa, and Randal Kolo Muani, four football players from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), have recently found themselves in hot water due to their involvement in anti-gay chants. Following PSG’s impressive 4-0 victory over Marseille at Parc des Princes, a video surfaced on social media showing the quartet supposedly joining the club’s ultras in shouting homophobic insults towards the Marseille supporters. The offensive chant included the phrase: “Marseillais, go f*ck your mothers.”

Naturally, this behavior has drawn severe criticism from both the football community and the wider public. Recognizing the gravity of their actions, all four players have since posted apologies on their respective social media accounts. However, this incident has not only affected the individuals involved but also taken a toll on PSG as a whole.

The disciplinary committee of the France Football Association (FA) has handed down punitive measures against both the players and the club. Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, Layvin Kurzawa, and Randal Kolo Muani have been suspended for a certain period of time as a consequence of their involvement in the homophobic chants. The players will have to face the consequences of their actions, hopefully learning from this mistake and making amends in the future.

Furthermore, PSG as a club has been dealt a blow in the form of a stadium sanction. The famous Auteuil stand, which is known for housing the passionate ultras fans, is to be closed for at least one match. This decision was made due to the continuous homophobic chants directed towards Marseille supporters during the match.

The club, however, is not fully satisfied with the imposed penalty and has expressed its discontent. PSG has released a statement, expressing regret that the disciplinary committee opted for an “excessive and collective” punishment. They believe that this measure could potentially hinder the club’s ongoing efforts in engaging in dialogue, prevention, and education regarding such sensitive issues. PSG remains committed to working with various stakeholders, including supporter groups, to address these matters effectively.

The French government authorities have also gotten involved in the matter, urging the French FA to take appropriate action against both the players and the fans responsible for the homophobic chants. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the need for greater tolerance, respect, and acceptance within the football community. It serves as a reminder that actions and words have consequences, and it is crucial for all involved parties to collectively strive for a more inclusive and welcoming environment in the sport.
