Freiburg 1-2 West Ham: Nayef Aguerd’s headed winner sees Hammers set new English European record

Freiburg and West Ham played in the Europa League Group A. The match ended with a victory for West Ham. Nayef Aguerd scored the winning goal in the second half, after Roland Sallai had equalized for Freiburg. The match also saw Lucas Paqueta score an early goal for West Ham. This win extended West Ham’s unbeaten record in European matches to 17 games, a new English record.

West Ham achieved a new English record by remaining undefeated in 17 consecutive European matches. They continued their flawless start to this season’s Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Freiburg.

Aguerd scored a header in the second half to give the Hammers a victory. They now have two wins in two matches and are at the top of Group A, leading by three points.

Lucas Paqueta scored an early goal for West Ham in Germany. However, there was no celebration from away fans as they were banned from attending the match due to previous incidents.

Freiburg scored to equalize in the second half after the visitors missed opportunities in the first half.

The Irons went ahead again in the 66th minute, thanks to Aguerd’s goal from Ward-Prowse’s excellent corner kick.

West Ham’s victory makes them the new European record holders, surpassing Leeds, Tottenham, and Manchester City.

West Ham’s task in Germany was made harder because they had to face 34,000 loud fans, while no away supporters were allowed at the game.

Paqueta scored a goal with a powerful header from Jarrod Bowen’s cross, silencing the home supporters. Bowen, who had been selected for the England squad earlier that day, provided the assist.

West Ham almost scored again when Mohammed Kudus’ shot hit the post after the Freiburg goalkeeper, Noah Atubolu, fumbled the ball.

Paqueta’s goal was disallowed for offside. He scored with a powerful shot into the top of the net after a strong run by Pablo Fornals into the box.

The Hammers couldn’t capitalize on the host’s weak first-half performance, and Freiburg capitalized instead after the break with Sallai scoring.

Lukasz Fabianski, the West Ham goalkeeper, made a great save to stop Sallai’s shot. However, Sallai managed to score on his second attempt after the rebound from Fabianski’s save.

Freiburg almost scored again after their equalizer. Kiliann Sildillia’s header hit the post, and Lucas Holer missed the rebound from close range.

West Ham quickly regained the lead with a strong header from Aguerd. He met Ward-Prowse’s corner kick and scored a goal that bounced off the underside of the crossbar.

West Ham won their match and are now in a strong position in Group A. Bowen had a chance to score late in the game but missed.

David Moyes, the manager of West Ham, praised his forward Lucas Paqueta, despite the fact that he sometimes finds him frustrating to deal with.

“It was a bit of an old-fashioned goal, down the side with a good cross, and then a great header like an old-fashioned centre-forward. I really enjoyed watching it,” said Moyes.

“Jarrod played well but Lucas was terrific. He drives me mad sometimes but everybody who watched him would have said this player has got incredible talent.

“There is a word that goes around, a maverick. He is that for us.

“It is really important we get him in and adapt to him and accept some of his things he may not do, things which I would say are conventional.

“But we are really enjoying him at the moment and he is terrific at taking the ball under pressure – but also there are moments when I say: ‘What are you doing?'”

On making it 17 matched undefeated in Europe, a record for an English club, Moyes said: “It’s a brilliant achievement, I’ve said to the boys we need to keep it going. Winning the game tonight was most important.

“I’m really pleased. We played very well especially, in the opening 20 or 30 minutes.

“They came back, which I expected. They got better and we had moments when we played very well but we mainly won the first half. We had to then be good defensively.”
