United player and captain and most recently as our coach. He remains an important part of the D.C. United family and a valued and cherished friend.”
Reflecting on his departure, Rooney expressed, “It’s the right time. I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the playoffs. It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing. What lies ahead, I don’t know. I’ve seen a lot of reports in the media. I’m going back with nothing lined up.”
Only hours after the confirmation of his departure from D.C. United, reports began circulating linking Rooney to the vacant managerial position at Birmingham City, a team in the English Championship. Sources suggest that the club’s American owners are not entirely convinced by current coach John Eustace and are showing interest in bringing in a more high-profile figure like Rooney, adding an intriguing twist to the Englishman’s coaching journey.
