Sandro Tonali: Newcastle midfielder facing ban from football for betting

Sandro Tonali confessed to placing bets on AC Milan winning matches during a hearing with the Italian Federation. He was one of the players involved in an investigation into football betting in Italy.

The Italian authorities are investigating Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for breaking betting regulations.

The 23-year-old Italian player was taken out of Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifying match against England at Wembley on Tuesday night. His club has stated that he is cooperating with the investigation.

The Premier League club said: “Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity.

“Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities.

“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support.

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

The Newcastle player confessed on Tuesday that he placed bets on Milan to win matches, during a hearing at the Italian Federation in Turin.

Tonali was involved in a football betting investigation last week. As a result, he was removed from the men’s national team for their loss against England on Tuesday.

He confessed to betting on matches, both those he played in and those he did not, to make Milan win.

Players can be banned from international football for up to three years for such behavior, according to FIFA Code 26.

Tonali is expected to receive a reduced suspension for his involvement in the investigation and for confessing to his wrongdoing.
