Jose Mourinho, Roma boss shown straight red card for mocking Monza bench with ‘cry-baby’ gestures

Jose Mourinho has made headlines once again, this time for his fiery antics during Roma’s clash against Monza. The experienced 60-year-old manager found himself in hot water after being sent off by referee Giovanni Ayroldi in stoppage time.

It all started when Roma’s Stephen El Shaarawy scored a dramatic winning goal, sending the Stadio Olimpico into a frenzy and propelling Roma up to sixth place in the Serie A standings. Mourinho, known for his passionate demeanor, couldn’t contain his emotions and proceeded to antagonize the Monza coaching staff with a series of ‘cry-baby’ gestures.

After the match, Mourinho didn’t shy away from pointing the finger of blame at the opposing bench. He expressed his frustration, claiming that the Monza coaching staff had attempted to influence the referees’ decisions throughout the game. It was a heated moment that added fuel to the already intense rivalry between the two teams.

Mourinho’s actions resulted in a straight red card, forcing him to leave the pitch prematurely. While his passion and competitive spirit are admired by many, this incident serves as a reminder of the fine line between emotional involvement and crossing the boundaries of sportsmanship.

Speaking to Sky Italia, the Roma boss said: “Why was I sent off? I don’t know. I made two gestures towards the opposing bench, but I didn’t use offensive words. Last year we played an excellent match in Monza and, after the game, good but still inexperienced people insulted us.

“Today, the only bench that put on a great show and put pressure on the referee was theirs. I’m not criticizing that, I’m criticizing the fact that swear words were used after the game. My words to them are just: ‘Good team and great coach’. There’s no need for that.”

Mourinho will miss Roma’s next match against Inter Milan on October 29.
