Giannis Antetokounmpo agrees to 3-year max extension with Bucks

The 2-time Kia NBA MVP has extended his contract with Milwaukee until the 2027-28 season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo agreed to a 3-year, $186 million contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to multiple reports.

The two-time Kia NBA MVP extends his current contract by two years with guaranteed payment. Additionally, he has the option to decide whether to continue for the 2027-28 season.

Since Giannis Antetokounmpo was chosen by the Bucks as the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, he has become one of the top players in the league. He is a seven-time All-Star and a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team. In 2021, he led the Bucks to win the NBA championship. This past season, he had his best performance with an average of 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in 63 games.

After a disappointing finish in the 2023 playoffs, the Bucks signed Damian Lillard, a highly skilled guard. With Antetokounmpo also committed to the team, the Lillard-Antetokounmpo partnership will have ample time to grow and improve.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is contracted until the 2025-26 season. He will earn around $94.4 million for the next two seasons, and then an additional $120 million for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

The last year is at his choice, which means he could earn about $66 million more in 2027-28.

If Antetokounmpo had waited until next summer to extend his contract, he could have earned even more money. He could have potentially signed a four-year agreement worth over $250 million.

“I said that it did not make sense to sign the contract right now because money’s not important — a lot of money is important. So I’m going to sign it next year,” Antetokounmpo said with a laugh during the Bucks’ Media Day event on Oct. 2. “But, no, at the end of the day, again, it doesn’t make sense. It does not make sense for me to sign it right now. I’ve got to always look at what’s best for me and my family, for my situation.

“But at the end of the day, I want to be a Milwaukee Buck for the rest of my career, as long as we are winning. It’s as simple as that.”
