Max Verstappen wins his 16th race of the 2023 season, breaking his own record. He started from third on the grid and became the world champion. Lewis Hamilton finishes second for Mercedes, while Charles Leclerc, who started from pole position, takes third place. Lando Norris impressively finishes fifth after starting from 17th position.
Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix, coming from third place on the grid. This victory is his 16th of the 2023 Formula 1 season.
The Red Bull driver had an excellent start by overtaking Charles Leclerc and his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz at the beginning of the race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The track’s particular conditions make it challenging to overtake other drivers.
Verstappen had a great start during a restart in the middle of the race. This restart happened after a red flag when Kevin Magnussen from Haas crashed into the barriers. Verstappen finished the race 13 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
With his third consecutive drivers’ title secured, Verstappen surpasses his own record from last season. He achieved this with three races remaining in the current campaign. Furthermore, his 51st career victory brings him on par with Alain Prost, placing them both in fourth position on the sport’s all-time list of winners.
Hamilton started in sixth place, overtook Sainz during the first pit stops, and then passed Leclerc on the track. This performance reignited his hopes of catching up to Sergio Perez in the drivers’ standings.
The Mexican driver, who aims to secure Red Bull’s first-ever one-two in the drivers’ championship, had his lead over Hamilton reduced to 20 points. This happened because he had to retire from his home race due to a collision with Leclerc in the first corner. Despite the damage to his front wing, Leclerc managed to finish third, ahead of Sainz.
Lando Norris achieved an impressive comeback by finishing in fifth place after starting from the 17th position on the grid. He secured this position by overtaking George Russell towards the end of the race.
The Mercedes car barely stayed ahead of Daniel Ricciardo to finish in sixth place. This was a great weekend for the AlphaTauri driver, as it was their best performance since returning to the sport. This result helped them move up from last place to eighth in the constructors’ standings.
Oscar Piastri had difficulty keeping up with his McLaren teammate Norris, who finished in eighth place. Williams’ Alex Albon and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon also earned points in the race.
Aston Martin had a difficult time with two drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, retiring after Saturday’s Q1 exits.
