WTA Finals: Iga Swiatek overcomes slow start to beat Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in Cancun

At the WTA Finals in Mexico, several exciting matches took place. Iga Swiatek defeated Marketa Vondrousova with a score of 7-6, 6-0. Coco Gauff had an impressive victory over Ons Jabeur, winning 6-0, 6-1 in less than an hour. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka started the finals with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win against Maria Sakkari. Jessica Pegula also performed well, beating Elena Rybakina with a score of 7-5, 6-2.

Iga Swiatek, ranked number 2 in the world, defeated Marketa Vondrousova, the Wimbledon champion, with a score of 7-6 6-0 in her first match at the WTA Finals in Cancun.

Vondrousova, who is participating in her first WTA Finals, started the opening set with a 2-0 lead after breaking Swiatek in the first game.

Swiatek, however, quickly erased that lead by successfully breaking her opponent’s serve, bringing the score to 2-2.

In the humid conditions, the players were both struggling with their serves. Then, a sloppy return from the baseline by the Polish player allowed Vondrousova to break again.

The Wimbledon champion kept the pressure and broke Swiatek’s serve in the seventh game, as Swiatek hit a return into the net.

Swiatek took advantage of the new balls to stop Vondrousova from winning the set. Then, she held her serve well to decrease the difference to 5-4.

Vondrousova lost her advantage as Swiatek started to play more aggressively and managed to break her serve, bringing the first set to a tie.

Swiatek took the first set on a tie break and quickly won the second set. She has a chance to become world No 1.

Monday’s match featured Coco Gauff, the US Open champion, defeating Ons Jabeur in a swift victory, with a score of 6-0 6-1. It took less than an hour for Gauff to secure the win.

Gauff won the first seven games before a rain delay. Jabeur finally scored a point after the break, but Gauff still won the match in 57 minutes.

On Sunday, Aryna Sabalenka, who is ranked number one in the world, won easily against Maria Sakkari in the finals.

Sabalenka criticized the arrangements for players at the season-ending championships on social media. Cancun was announced as the host venue less than two months ago.

Swiatek and Vondrousova criticized the court, which was placed on top of a golf course. Swiatek said it was uncomfortable, while Vondrousova described it as very bad.

Sabalenka will play against Jessica Pegula on Tuesday night. Pegula also won her opening group match. Sakkari will face Elena Rybakina.
