WTA Finals: Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova criticises condition of court in Cancun

Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova expressed her criticism towards the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) after losing her opening match to Iga Swiatek in Cancun.

Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova criticized the WTA after losing her first match to Iga Swiatek at the WTA Finals.

Following her 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 loss to second seed Iga Swiatek, Vondrousova expressed her disappointment on Instagram. She stated that her first WTA Finals did not meet her expectations, despite the hard work she put in throughout the year.

“(The) stadium is not at all ready for the matches and to me it feels like the people from WTA are absolutely not interested in how we who are supposed to play on that court feel. We do not feel that anyone listens to us and is interested in our opinions. Very sad.”

Swiatek joined the criticism, saying during her on-court interview that the surface was “not comfortable” and she also called for more fans to come to the matches.

For three consecutive years, the host of the esteemed tournament, where the top eight players of the season compete, was determined less than two months before the event.

World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka expressed feeling “disrespected” due to the condition of the temporary court in Cancun after her first match on Sunday.

“This is not the level of organisation we expect for the Finals,” she said. “To be honest, I don’t feel safe moving on this court a lot of the time, the bounce is not consistent at all, and we weren’t able to practise on this court until yesterday for the first time.

“It’s just not acceptable to me with so much on the line and so much at stake.”

The season-ending tournament was held in Singapore from 2014-2018 before moving to Shenzhen, Guadalajara, and Fort Worth in subsequent years.
