Brentford values Ivan Toney at £100m and plans to keep him until the end of the season
The English player is being watched by many top clubs in Europe and the Premier League. Chelsea and Arsenal are particularly interested.
He will finish his eight-month ban for betting on January 16, which is in the middle of the next transfer window. This has led to increased speculation that he might move to a larger club.
“The club’s boardroom does not take reports of a £50m-£60m fee seriously. It would require a very high offer for Brentford to consider selling during the last 16 days of the transfer window.”
Brentford’s manager, Thomas Frank, believes that Toney is worth £100m. If Chelsea shows interest, Brentford would have a strong case for asking that amount.
Frank said: “£100m plus?… What would you pay for a striker that guarantees you 20-plus goals? And this is 20 goals for a mid-table club. What can he do in a bigger club?”
It’s difficult to justify anything less for a proven Premier League goal scorer. Last season, Chelsea spent over £100m each on two midfielders, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. The goal scorer I’m referring to was third in the league with 20 goals.
Harry Kane scored 10 more goals than Toney. He left Tottenham for Bayern Munich for over £100m with only one year remaining on his contract. Toney, on the other hand, will still have 18 months left in January and is three years younger than Kane at 27.
Toney is expected to be considered for the England team in Euro 2024. However, there aren’t many English strikers available for purchase, as Ollie Watkins has signed a four-year contract.
Toney is important for Brentford’s season, especially since strikers Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo will be leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
Their temporary departures would leave only Toney and Neal Maupay as the strikers, as Kevin Schade is out with a long-term injury.
The West London club has been fully supportive of Toney and his family after he acknowledged to having 232 betting charges from the FA. They have arranged behind-closed-doors matches to keep him fit and have been paying his salary in full.
Toney might want to stay until next summer. It’s uncertain if Arsenal can afford to buy a striker in January. They currently have Brentford goalkeeper, David Raya, on loan and may make the transfer permanent.
Chelsea is interested in signing Toney for their striker position. They are considering him along with other options because they have had difficulties scoring goals this season. Nicholas Jackson is transitioning into a center-forward role, while Armando Broja is recovering from a long-term injury.
Brentford has done well without Toney. They had a great win against Chelsea and are now in 10th place.
Mbuemo scored his eighth goal of the season in that game. He has become more important for the team as several key players like Rico Henry, Josh Dasilva, Keane Lewis-Potter, Schade, and Shandon Baptiste have been unable to play due to injuries.
Brentford is excited about what they can achieve this season when all these players come back, especially Toney. He might help them secure another top-half finish in the Premier League.
