WTA Finals: Iga Swiatek storms to glory with straight-sets win over Jessica Pegula in Cancun

Iga Swiatek won the final match against Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-1 6-0. The match was delayed to Monday because of rain in Cancun. As a result of this victory, the 22-year-old player from Poland regained the world No. 1 ranking, surpassing Aryna Sabalenka.

Iga Swiatek easily defeated Jessica Pegula 6-1 6-0 to become the champion of the WTA Finals in Cancun. This victory also helped her reclaim the top spot in the world rankings from Aryna Sabalenka.

The four-time Grand Slam winner defeated Pegula and won her first WTA Finals trophy. The match was delayed a day because of rain.

Swiatek played incredibly well and dominated the match. She won 11 consecutive games by playing solidly from the baseline and putting pressure on Pegula, who made a lot of mistakes.

The 22-year-old Polish player had a perfect record at the WTA tour’s season-closing championship. She won all 10 sets she played, only giving up a total of 20 games.

That is the fewest number of games lost by the tournament’s winner since 2003. The previous lowest number during that time was 34 games lost by Justine Henin in 2007.

Iiatek is the youngest WTA Finals champion since Petra Kvitova in 2011. She has won 11 consecutive matches and has a record of 68-11 with six trophies in 2023. She also won the French Open in June.

This win helps her reclaim the top spot in the world rankings, which she held from April 2022 until September. She had surrendered the position to Sabalenka. She defeated Sabalenka in a semi-final match that started on Saturday and ended on Sunday after being interrupted by rain.

Pegula had not lost a set before the final and she defeated her doubles partner, Coco Gauff, who is the US Open champion, on Saturday.

The American, who is 29 years old, was trying to become the oldest first-time champion at the WTA Finals. Winning this trophy would have been the most significant achievement of her career so far.

After defeating Sabalenka and No. 4 Elena Rybakina in the group stage, Pegula faced No. 3 Gauff. Then, she played against No. 2 Swiatek, becoming the first woman to compete against all four top-ranked players in a single event since the introduction of the WTA rankings in 1975. Unfortunately, her winning streak of nine matches came to an abrupt end.

The tournament received criticism from the top eight women players due to its problematic preparation. The temporary venue was completed just one day before the event.

Earlier today, Laura Siegemund from Germany and Vera Zvonareva from Russia won the postponed doubles final. They defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA and Ellen Perez from Australia with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
