Novak Djokovic defeated Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1. He now needs to wait and see if he will progress at the ATP Finals.
Novak Djokovic won his last round-robin match at the ATP Finals against Hubert Hurkacz. However, he is unsure if he will qualify for the semifinals.
The defending champion won against Hurkacz with a score of 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1 after losing to Jannik Sinner in the previous match.
Djokovic needs Sinner to beat Holger Rune later, so he can advance to the semi-finals of the season-ending tournament for the top eight players this year.
“My kids are arriving tonight, so I don’t think I’ll watch,” Djokovic said. “I did my job and I’m going to spend tonight with the family. Then tomorrow I can worry about whether I qualified or not.”
Djokovic got frustrated at the beginning because he couldn’t return Hurkacz’s powerful serve. However, Hurkacz made some mistakes later on and Djokovic won 10 consecutive points, taking a big lead in the tiebreaker.
Djokovic made a double fault, allowing Hurkacz to break his serve and take a 3-2 lead in the second set. Hurkacz then served two aces to save two break points and went on to win the set.
Hurkacz served routinely at 140mph (225kph) and produced 24 aces compared to Djokovic’s six. However, Djokovic broke to seize control midway through the third set and extended his perfect 7-0 record against Hurkacz.
“He’s got one of the biggest serves in world,” Djokovic said. “It’s very, very tough to return, especially here at an altitude of nearly 300 meters (1,000 feet). I was waiting for chances when he missed his first serve – that was my only chance.”
Sinner and Djokovic both have two wins, Rune has one win, and Hurkacz and Tsitsipas have no wins.
Daniil Medvedev has already won two matches in the other group. Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev have won a match each, while Andrey Rublev has not won any matches yet.
