Novak Djokovic has won the ATP Finals six times before, in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2022. This surpasses Roger Federer’s record of six titles. After defeating Jannik Sinner with a score of 6-3 6-3, Djokovic expressed his desire to achieve a ‘Golden Slam’ in 2024.
Novak Djokovic won the ATP World Tour Finals in Turin, defeating Jannik Sinner. This victory marked his seventh title win in the tournament.
A determined Djokovic defeated Sinner, winning 6-3 6-3 to claim victory, after losing to the Italian in the earlier round of the competition.
Following his win, the 36-year-old said he aims to win all the major tournaments next year and also secure the gold medal in singles at the Paris Olympics, thus achieving a ‘Golden Slam’.
Steffi Graf is the only player to have achieved the feat before. She won the Australian, French, and US Opens, Wimbledon, and a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
“You can win four slams and an Olympic gold,” Djokovic said. “I have always the highest ambitions and goals. That’s not going to be different for the next year.
“The drive that I have is still there. My body has been serving me well, listening to me well. I have a great team of people around me.
“Motivation, especially for the biggest tournaments in sport, is still present. It still inspires me to keep going.”
The tennis player, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles, expressed his pride in his performance this season. He mentioned that he couldn’t have asked for better results, winning four out of five tournaments.
“It’s a great reward for what my team and I have been through this year, being one of the most successful years in my career that I’ve ever had.”
Djokovic dominated the match against Sinner from the beginning. In the first set, he played almost perfectly, only losing two points when serving. This is another impressive achievement in his already remarkable career.
Novak Djokovic, currently the number one tennis player in the world, has won the tournament seven times, surpassing the previous record of six titles set by Roger Federer. Djokovic first won the tournament in 2008.
Throughout the second set, the Serb kept the pressure and broke Sinner in the first game. He didn’t slow down even though the 22-year-old put up a good fight.
At one point, Djokovic won 14 points in a row against a player ranked fourth in the world. Sinner briefly slowed down the march of the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Sinner managed to avoid falling behind in the match when Djokovic missed a passing shot. Later, Sinner had opportunities to break back, but unfortunately couldn’t capitalize on them.
Djokovic missed chances to go up 5-2 due to some mistakes in his game.
The crowd cheered for Djokovic as he moved closer to victory. A double fault by Sinner ended the match, and Djokovic became the most successful player in the tournament’s history, surpassing Federer.
His win concludes a year in which he won three of the four Grand Slam titles and seized back the world No 1 spot from Carlos Alcaraz and worryingly for the chasing pack he will head into 2024 looking as dominant as ever.
His victory marks the end of a year where he won three out of four major tennis tournaments and regained the top rank in the world, previously held by Carlos Alcaraz. What is even more concerning for his competitors is that he will enter 2024 with the same level of dominance.
