Barcelona have confirmed the unfortunate news that Gavi, the talented 19-year-old midfielder, has suffered an ACL injury and is set to undergo surgery. The young starlet was playing for Spain in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia when he was forced off the field in tears. It quickly became evident that the injury was quite severe, leaving Gavi facing a lengthy road to recovery.
The extent of the damage means that there is a strong possibility that Gavi’s 2023-24 campaign has come to an abrupt end. The club has refrained from providing a specific timeline for his recovery, but it is clear that he will be sidelined for several months as he rehabilitates from this unfortunate setback.
In a statement released on the official Barcelona website, the club provided details of the injury: “Tests conducted on Monday morning on Gavi, a first-team player, have confirmed a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, as well as an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days, following which a further medical update will be provided. Gavi sustained the injury while on international duty for Spain during the final game of their European Championship qualifying group against Georgia. The Barcelona midfielder had to be substituted after just 26 minutes of the match.”
Gavi, who emerged from Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, has already amassed an impressive 111 appearances for the club. He has found the back of the net on seven occasions at the senior level and has also earned 27 international caps. His talent and potential have been recognized by the club, as he is tied to a contract until 2026, which includes a staggering €1 billion (£876m/$1.bn) release clause.
This injury comes as a significant setback for both Gavi and Barcelona, as they now face the challenge of coping without one of their brightest prospects. The club will undoubtedly provide the necessary support and resources to aid Gavi in his recovery journey, and fans will be eagerly anticipating his return to the pitch once he has fully rehabilitated from his ACL injury.
