Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola experienced a disappointing evening as his team succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa, producing their lowest shot count ever recorded under his management. While Villa managed to muster an impressive 22 shots, the most any Guardiola-led side has had to face in his career, City only managed two feeble attempts on goal throughout the entire match.
This defeat against Villa marks the continuation of City’s poor form in recent weeks, as they have failed to secure a victory in their last four games. Prior to their encounter with Villa, they were held to draws against tough opponents such as Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham. As a result, they now find themselves six points adrift of league leaders Arsenal. To further compound their woes, City have slipped two points behind fourth-placed Villa, who have now overtaken them in the league table.
The two shots recorded by City were rather lackluster, occurring within seconds of each other when Erling Haaland tried his luck first with a shot and then with a header, only to be denied by the impressive Emiliano Martinez. After the 11th minute, City failed to test the opposition goalkeeper any further, and it was Leon Bailey’s goal that ultimately proved decisive in sealing their fate.
Such a streak of four games without a victory is an unfamiliar and unwelcome situation for the reigning champions. However, they must now focus on regaining their winning form. Their upcoming fixture against Luton Town provides an opportunity for City to break free from this unwanted streak and make amends for their recent struggles. Guardiola and his team will surely be determined to bounce back and reestablish their dominance on the pitch.
