Mikel Arteta reveals he’s held ‘private meetings’ with PGMOL discussing refereeing improvement after infamous ’embarrassing’ rant following Newcastle defeat

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been actively addressing the issues surrounding refereeing in recent times, expressing his concerns and calling for improvements. After his public criticism of officials following a contentious decision, Arteta revealed that he has been engaged in private discussions with the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), the refereeing body in English football.

During a press conference, Arteta mentioned these private meetings, without going into specific details. He emphasized the importance of open discussions and stated that he stands by his opinions, highlighting his support for the ongoing efforts to enhance the game. Arteta expressed his desire for collaborative improvement, emphasizing that it’s crucial for all parties involved, including players, officials, clubs, and technology, to work together towards creating a better on-field experience.

The use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has statistically led to an increase in the number of correct decisions made in the Premier League. However, it is not without its flaws, as mistakes are still being made by both the referees themselves and the individuals operating the VAR system. Additionally, the extensive use of VAR has led to a slower pace of the game, taking away from the usual fluidity and excitement. If these issues can be resolved, it will undoubtedly contribute to an overall improvement in the sport.

Nevertheless, it is important to note that there is a line that should not be crossed when it comes to showing disrespect towards referees. Players and managers must take responsibility for their actions and demonstrate respect towards match officials. Failure to do so may result in harsher punishments being enforced as a deterrent.

Looking ahead, Arsenal will be back in action in the Premier League on Sunday when they face Brighton at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners will be aiming to bounce back from their defeat against Brighton in their previous encounter, as they seek to secure a positive result on home turf.
