Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirms Victor Osimhen will leave this summer

Napoli’s president has officially announced that Victor Osimhen will be departing the club during the upcoming summer transfer window, with potential destinations including Real Madrid, PSG, or a team from the esteemed Premier League. This revelation brings to fruition the longstanding speculation surrounding Osimhen’s future, despite the fact that he committed to a new contract with a substantial release clause of approximately £113m ($144m) in December.

Aurelio De Laurentiis, the president of Napoli, shared with reporters, “We were aware of this since last summer; the negotiations for his renewal have been protracted and conducted in an amicable manner. For this reason, we were fully aware that he would be heading to Real Madrid, PSG, or to represent a Premier League team.”

Osimhen made the switch to Napoli from Lille in 2020 for a record-breaking fee of €70 million (£59.8m), which could escalate to €80m (£68.35m) with add-ons. Throughout his time with the club, he has showcased an impressive goal-scoring record, netting 67 goals in 119 appearances, including an outstanding tally of 31 goals last season. Notably, his contributions played a pivotal role in Napoli securing their first Serie A title in 33 years in 2023. He has undeniably carved out a legacy at the club and his imminent departure is set to provide a substantial financial windfall for The Blues. Since his arrival, Osimhen has evolved from a promising talent to arguably one of the premier strikers in the world.

Presently, Osimhen is representing Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations, with his next appearance scheduled on Saturday night in the competition’s round of 16 clash against Cameroon. Following this commitment, he will resume his duties for Napoli next month. The proficient striker will undoubtedly aspire to culminate his tenure with the Italian side on a triumphant note, preferably by adding further silverware to his list of achievements.
