The bronze statue honoring legendary Laker Kobe Bryant, which will be unveiled in downtown Los Angeles outside the Crypto.com Arena, pays tribute to the iconic basketball player’s unforgettable legacy. Set to be revealed on Thursday, the significant date of 2/8/24 carries profound symbolism as it honors both jersey numbers worn by Bryant during his NBA career – No. 8 and No. 24, as well as his daughter, Gigi Bryant, who wore No. 2.
The arena, known by some as the Staples Center and others as the Crypto.com Arena, holds a special place in the hearts of Lakers fans as the “House that Kobe Built.” Following the Lakers’ move to the arena from the Forum in Inglewood in 1999, the team secured its first championship in what became a three-peat during the Kobe and Shaq era. Bryant, who spent his entire 20-year career as a Laker, went on to win two more titles and delivered numerous historic moments inside the arena, including his remarkable 81-point game.
The profound impact of Kobe Bryant extends beyond his on-court achievements. Following his tragic passing, fans gathered at the arena to pay tribute to the basketball icon, particularly during the somber evening of the 2020 Grammy Awards. The Grammys commenced with a moving tribute to Bryant, featuring a performance of “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” by Boyz II Men and host Alicia Keys.
The enduring presence of Kobe Bryant within the arena is a testament to his indelible legacy, making it fitting that his bronze statue will be located outside the “house that he built.” This commemoration joins the statues of other sports icons, including Lakers legends Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and Elgin Baylor, as well as figures such as former professional boxer Oscar De La Hoya, sportscaster Chick Hearn, and Hockey Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille.
Kobe Bryant’s admiration for Michael Jordan is reflected in the tribute to his legacy, with his statue designed by the same talented sculptors, Omri Amrany and Julie Rotblatt Amrany, who crafted the iconic statue in Chicago. This married duo is celebrated for their remarkable sculptures, which also include tributes to figures such as Dirk Nowitzki, Hank Gathers, A’ja Wilson, Barry Sanders, and Vince Lombardi.
The NBA has confirmed a strict limit for onsite attendance at the unveiling ceremony due to logistical conditions, emphasizing that additional requests cannot be accommodated. However, following the unveiling, the public will have the opportunity to view the statue from 10 a.m. on Friday, with Chick Hearn Court remaining closed to all vehicle access through Saturday, Feb. 10. As the statue becomes a permanent fixture, it will stand as a powerful symbol of Kobe’s enduring Lakers legacy, enabling fans from across the globe to honor and reflect on his extraordinary basketball journey.
In conjunction with this special event, the Lakers announced that the team will wear their Mamba uniforms for Thursday’s game against Denver, further commemorating the enduring impact of Kobe Bryant’s legacy on the sport and the world of basketball.
