Cristiano Ronaldo banned and fined for vulgar response to Lionel Messi taunts

Cristiano Ronaldo’s encounter with controversy during Al-Nassr’s clash with Al-Shabab has led to ramifications for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. After a dramatic 3-2 win over their Saudi Pro League rivals, Ronaldo was captured on camera appearing to aim an obscene gesture towards his critics in the crowd, following taunts related to Lionel Messi. In response to this, an investigation was promptly initiated, leading to a swift decision by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). The SAFF’s verdict mandates a one-match ban for Ronaldo, coupled with a fine of 30,000 Saudi Riyals (£6,300).

Furthermore, as part of the committee’s ruling, 10,000 Saudi riyals will be paid to the SAFF, with an additional 20,000 riyals designated for Al-Shabab to aid in covering the costs associated with filing a complaint. It’s noteworthy that the decision is not open to appeal, effectively ensuring that Ronaldo will be sidelined for the upcoming meeting with Al-Hazm on Thursday.

This isn’t the first instance of Ronaldo being at the center of such actions, as he also seemingly grabbed his genitals during a Riyadh Cup game with Al-Hilal on February 8, followed by rubbing a scarf on his crotch while leaving the field. Additionally, he has previously reacted to ‘Messi’ chants from the terraces. Despite these controversies, it’s undeniable that Ronaldo has continued to deliver on the pitch, exemplified by a crucial penalty converted against Al-Shabab, taking his season goal tally to an impressive 34 goals in just 35 appearances.
