Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is facing the possibility of missing three upcoming games after being shown a red card for dissent during his team’s 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in La Liga. The Barcelona legend received a yellow card for protesting a decision, and shortly after, he was dismissed by referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez for continuing to express his displeasure from the touchline.
Typically, a straight sending-off results in a two-match ban. However, given that this is Xavi’s second red card this season, there is a possibility that the league may impose an additional game ban as a consequence of his repeat offense, as reported by Diario Sport. Consequently, if he is indeed sidelined for three matches, the World Cup-winning midfielder will be forced to watch Barcelona’s clash against Real Madrid on April 21 from the stands.
Throughout his three-year tenure as Barcelona boss, Xavi has accumulated 24 yellow cards in La Liga, averaging a caution every 5.5 league games, according to Barca Noticias. Despite this disciplinary record, the legendary midfielder is determined to maintain a strong presence on the touchline during his final months as Barcelona’s coach. Nonetheless, a three-match suspension would see him absent from crucial encounters against Las Palmas, Cadiz, and Real Madrid.
