Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has had to withdraw from the England squad due to a minor muscle issue. This inconvenience will see him miss friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, the last two England games before Gareth Southgate announces his squad for Euro 2024 in May. Saka’s withdrawal has been described as a precautionary measure, and he will now return to Arsenal for continued rehabilitation.
Saka, who has been in fine form for Arsenal this season, contributing significantly to their position at the top of the Premier League, will be assessed at Arsenal in the coming days. The 22-year-old’s absence in the upcoming international fixtures serves as a blow, both for the player himself and the England national team, as they finalize their preparations for the Euros.
The Football Association released a statement on Thursday, confirming Saka’s departure from the England camp: “Bukayo Saka has left the England camp and returned to his club for continued rehabilitation. The Arsenal forward reported to St George’s Park with an injury and has been unable to participate in training. No further replacements are planned as a 25-man England squad continue their preparation for the forthcoming internationals with Brazil and Belgium.”
During his time at St George’s Park, Saka had been working on an individual programme indoors while being accompanied by fellow players Harry Kane, Cole Palmer, and Jordan Henderson. The news of Saka’s injury comes as Arsenal gear up to face Manchester City in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash at the Etihad on March 31, following the conclusion of the international break. This match against Manchester City holds significant importance for Arsenal in their pursuit of success in the Premier League.
Saka’s absence from the England squad and impending return to Arsenal for rehabilitation will be closely monitored by both the national team and his club, as they aim to ensure his complete recovery and swift return to action.
