Xabi Alonso has made a decision to reject Bayern Munich and Liverpool, choosing to remain as the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen

The latest news confirms that Xabi Alonso will indeed stay with Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season, marking a significant setback for both Bayern Munich and Liverpool, who had been eyeing him for their vacant managerial positions. This decision comes as no surprise to many, given the remarkable unbeaten season that Alonso has guided his team through, bringing them within touching distance of their first-ever Bundesliga title. The announcement was made in a press conference on Friday, where Alonso formally communicated his decision to continue as the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich had already been informed of Alonso’s choice, effectively ending their hopes of bringing him in to lead their team. Similarly, Liverpool had conceded that they would not be able to secure Alonso as a replacement for the outgoing Jurgen Klopp, as the Spaniard expressed his commitment to staying at the BayArena.

In a statement to the press, Alonso addressed the speculation surrounding his future, expressing his desire to take the time to reflect and make a well-considered decision. He emphasized that his work as a coach at Bayer Leverkusen is far from complete, and he sees it as the ideal environment for his further development in that role.

Speaking to reporters, the coveted head coach said: “We have had a lot of speculation regarding my future. I wanted to use the international break to reflect and take a decision. Last week, I had a very good meeting and informed the club my decision to continue being coach.

“My job is not over here. I feel this is the right place for me to be and develop as a coach.”

It is truly remarkable that Bayer Leverkusen remains unbeaten in all competitions this season under the 42-year-old’s leadership, positioning them as strong contenders for an unprecedented treble. With a comfortable 10-point lead in the Bundesliga and continued progress in the DFB-Pokal and Europa League, the team is set to face Dusseldorf and West Ham, respectively. The news of Alonso’s commitment to the club has undoubtedly injected further confidence and determination as Leverkusen aims to secure the league title and make strides in the upcoming cup semi-final against Dusseldorf. Their next match against Hoffenheim will be a crucial opportunity to maintain their momentum and continue their impressive run.
