Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has firmly denied any reports suggesting that he has reached an agreement with Liverpool to succeed Jurgen Klopp. In a recent press conference, the 39-year-old stated that there had been no interview with the Reds and certainly no agreement in place. Amorim made it clear that his focus remains on guiding Sporting to the league title, with the club currently sitting four points clear of Benfica in the standings.
“This is the last time I’m going to talk about my future. There was no interview and certainly no agreement,” said the Portuguese boss. “The only thing we all want here is to be champions with Sporting, nothing will change. I’m the Sporting coach and there was no interview or agreement with any club.”
Amorim emphasized his commitment to representing Sporting, stating, “I’m just focused, as always, on representing my club. As I no longer have anything else to say… There will be no interviews or agreements with the Sporting coach. The matter is completely resolved, whether related to this club or another.”
While Amorim is considered one of the top candidates to take over as the next Liverpool boss, the process of finding Klopp’s successor is still ongoing. The club is conducting due diligence and background checks on several candidates, although no formal negotiations have commenced with any individual.
In the wake of Klopp’s departure announcement, Liverpool has witnessed significant changes in personnel behind the scenes. Former sporting director Michael Edwards has returned as the chief executive of football, and Richard Hughes is set to join from Bournemouth as the new sporting director. In addition, rumors have linked Benfica’s Pedro Marques with a senior backroom role at Anfield.
Although there were previous strong speculations linking former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso with a return to the club as Klopp’s successor, he recently announced his decision to stay in his current role at Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season.
Over the past four years, Amorim has made a significant impact during his tenure at Sporting. After successful stints at Casa Pia and Braga, the former Portugal international was appointed by Sporting and led the team to their first league title in 19 years in his first full season in charge. Additionally, he has secured two League Cups with Sporting and is poised to claim his second league title this season, with his side holding a four-point lead over Benfica, with a game in hand.
