Recent reports from Spanish publication Relevo suggest that Bayern Munich could be considering a move to secure the services of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. The Catalan club is allegedly under pressure to balance their financial accounts by the end of June, with a reported need to raise approximately €100 million (£86m/$107m). As a result, it is speculated that de Jong could be made available for a reduced price, ranging between €60 million (£52m/$64m) and a maximum of €70 million (£60m/$75m).
Although de Jong has expressed his contentment with life in Barcelona and his fulfillment in playing for his dream club, the club’s urgent financial situation may lead to a departure. It’s noted that Barcelona’s midfield is notably strong, featuring talented players such as Pedri and Gavi, potentially making de Jong expendable if Bayern meets the required fee. Despite previous refusals to entertain reports of an exit, the prospect of Bayern’s interest in him could alter the situation.
Furthermore, it’s mentioned that two summers ago, de Jong faced intense interest from Manchester United and his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, but remained steadfast in his commitment to Barcelona, particularly as the club owed him unpaid wages. His influence was noteworthy during Barcelona’s successful La Liga campaign last season.
Notably, Barcelona is at risk of losing their Spanish league crown to Real Madrid and is poised to face their Bundesliga counterparts, Bayern Munich, in the Champions League semi-finals. On the international stage, de Jong is expected to play a significant role for the Netherlands during the upcoming European Championship as they aim to achieve success reminiscent of their 1988 triumph in Germany.
