Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, currently playing for Chelsea, has decided to make a heartfelt return to his former club Fluminense at the conclusion of the season. Despite rumored interest from various Premier League clubs, the 39-year-old has opted to rejoin the Brazilian side. After completing a four-year tenure with Chelsea, Silva will depart west London upon the expiration of his contract and make a poignant homecoming to Fluminense, where he has committed to a two-year agreement.
Silva is set to bid a touching farewell to the Chelsea faithful following the team’s last game of the season against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on May 19. His contribution to the club, including winning the Champions League and amassing over 150 appearances, has solidified his status as an iconic figure. Expressing his deep connection to the club, Silva has affirmed his intention to revisit Chelsea in the future.
The club said in a statement: “Following four seasons with Chelsea, Thiago Silva will depart after our final game of the Premier League season against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge and re-join Brazilian club Fluminense.
“Chelsea have agreed with Thiago that he can join up early with his new teammates after signing a two-year contract with the Brazilian club. Thiago will be allowed to train with Fluminense prior to his registration transferring on July 1.
“The 39-year-old will depart Stamford Bridge having made more than 150 appearances for the Blues and having lifted the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
“He has also forged a lasting bond with Blues supporters and was named the club’s Player of the Year at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.”
In a recent return from injury, Silva played a vital role in Chelsea’s resounding 5-0 victory over West Ham in the Premier League. With the season drawing to a close, he aims to feature in the team’s remaining matches against Nottingham Forest, Brighton, and Bournemouth, as Chelsea endeavors to salvage a challenging season and secure a spot in the next edition of the Europa League.
