Scottie Scheffler’s arrest is set to be reviewed by the Louisville police after the world’s number one player was detained at the PGA Championship

Louisville police will investigate if procedures were followed in the arrest of world No 1 Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship. Scheffler’s arrest by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning made headlines as he attempted to drive into Valhalla Golf Club in heavy traffic caused by an earlier, unrelated accident. The golfer described the events as “a big misunderstanding” following “a very chaotic situation.”

At 27 years old, Scheffler was taken away by police in handcuffs before being released in time to return for the second round. He is facing charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

The Louisville Metro Police Department, led by police chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel, is under scrutiny, and Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg stated that the police department is reviewing Scheffler’s arrest. The department is expected to provide an update on Thursday following the incident.

“I think that’s critically important that we do that, not just in high-profile events like took place on Friday, but on a regular basis,” Greenberg said.

“And if policies are not being followed, there will be transparency about that. There will be action taken.”

The golfer’s arraignment date was originally set for Tuesday May 21 but was pushed back to Monday June 3. Scheffler’s lawyer has stated their readiness to go to trial if the charge of assaulting a police officer is not dropped, firmly asserting that Scheffler “didn’t do anything wrong.”

Despite the tumultuous events, Scheffler managed to deliver a notable performance at the PGA Championship, finishing tied-eighth as Xander Schauffele claimed his maiden major title at Valhalla. Scheffler quickly transitioned from a chaotic start on Friday to carding a solid six-under 65 on Sunday, demonstrating his resilience in the face of adversity.

Following the PGA Championship, Scheffler expressed his commitment to feature in the upcoming PGA Tour event, the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas, demonstrating his determination to continue his professional golf career despite the recent challenges.
