Monaco GP: Charles Leclerc emerges victorious over Oscar Piastri on his home turf following a major first-lap collision that prompts a red flag

Charles Leclerc secured a significant victory in Monaco, putting an end to his winless streak in F1 by clinching a win on home soil ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

The eventful race saw a notable crash on the opening lap, leading to its temporary suspension, and Leclerc effectively fending off Piastri to claim his first victory since July 2022. His Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz, also delivered a strong performance, securing third place ahead of Lando Norris. This outcome further closed the gap in the constructors’ standings, with Ferrari trailing Red Bull by only 24 points.

The race was notably red-flagged after a major collision involving Kevin Magnussen, Sergio Perez, and Nico Hulkenberg, resulting in all drivers emerging unscathed. Leclerc, having experienced past disappointments in Monaco, seized the opportunity after achieving pole position and navigating through the challenges posed by the race stoppage and tire change regulations. He maintained composure during the restart, skillfully managing his lead and ultimately crossing the finish line with a comfortable margin over Piastri.

“From my point of view, I had a good part of my front on Perez’s rear and when he went to the wall I got pushed to the wall and made contact with him,” said Magnussen.

“I trusted he was going to leave space for me since I was there. It’s not a corner where you’re braking into it, it’s a bend on the straight so you have to have a car otherwise you leave the other guy no option.”

Sainz, despite facing pressure from Norris, successfully defended his position, securing his fourth podium of the year. Throughout the race, numerous incidents unfolded, including a collision between Esteban Ocon and his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, as well as strategic discussions within the Mercedes and Red Bull teams. Despite the thrilling dynamics at play, Leclerc’s masterful performance and long-awaited win in Monaco stood out as the highlight of the event.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari – 1st:

“No words can explain that. It’s such a difficult race, I think the fact twice I’ve been starting on pole position and we couldn’t quite make it makes it even better in a way.

“It means a lot, obviously. It’s the race which made me dream of becoming a Formula 1 driver one day.

“Fifteen laps to the end you’re hoping nothing happens and the emotions are coming.

“My dad has given everything for me to be here and it was a dream of ours for me to race here and win here, so it’s unbelievable.”
