Tottenham and RB Leipzig have reached an agreement to prolong Timo Werner’s tenure until the conclusion of the upcoming season. The German striker, a temporary addition from RB Leipzig in January, contributed significantly to Spurs’ efforts with 14 appearances across various competitions and two goals. The initial agreement granted Tottenham the option to secure the 28-year-old permanently for £15 million, but the revised deal includes a reduced £8.5 million buyout clause.
Werner’s impactful presence not only provided manager Ange Postecoglou with bolstered attacking options but also served as a source of inspiration for the team until a hamstring injury sidelined him for the last five matches of the Premier League campaign. Despite his absence, Spurs managed to secure a commendable fifth-place finish, thereby clinching a spot in the Europa League for the upcoming season.
With an impressive record of 24 goals from 57 appearances for the German national team, Werner’s last international outing took place in a friendly match against Belgium in March 2023. His contributions during his two-year tenure at Chelsea were notable, as he managed to net 23 goals in 89 appearances and was instrumental in the team’s victories, leading to prestigious titles such as the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. These accomplishments undoubtedly underscored his prowess and earned him a well-deserved reputation before his return to Leipzig in 2022.
Returning to Spurs after spending the latter half of the 2023/24 season there, Werner’s season-long loan includes a new option-to-buy clause, significantly reduced from the initial £15 million. Demonstrating a keen interest in remaining in London, where he previously played for Chelsea, Werner is enthusiastic about the opportunity to continue contributing to Spurs.
