Uruguay’s Boca Juniors striker Edinson Cavani has recently announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of an illustrious career representing his country.

The 37-year-old forward, who was a key figure in Uruguay’s victory at the 2011 Copa America, leaves behind a legacy as Uruguay’s second-most capped player, having made 136 appearances, and the second highest scorer with 58 goals, closely trailing his former teammate Luis Suarez. Cavani’s journey in the national team started back in February 2008, when he made his debut in a friendly match against Colombia, a game that ended in a 2-2 draw.

Reflecting on his decision, Cavani expressed his gratitude and nostalgia in a heartfelt message on Instagram, stating, “They were undoubtedly many precious years, I would have a thousand things to say, tell and remember, but today I want to dedicate myself to this new stage of my career and give everything where I have to be.” Despite bidding farewell to international duties, Cavani assured his unwavering support for the national team, emphasizing, “Today I decide to take a step aside, but I will always follow you with a beating heart, like when I used to go out on the pitch wearing this beautiful shirt.”

Transitioning his focus to club football, Cavani achieved remarkable success during his tenure with Paris St Germain, clinching six Ligue 1 titles and five French Cups between 2014 and 2020 and netting an impressive tally of 200 goals in all competitions for the Parisian club. Before his stint in France, Cavani also made a significant impact at Napoli, where he secured the 2011-12 Coppa Italia, and later ventured to Manchester United. In July 2023, Cavani embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Boca Juniors, a move that signaled a fresh challenge following his time with LaLiga side Valencia.
