Gable Steveson, the youngest freestyle wrestler to achieve Olympic gold as a super heavyweight, has recently ventured into American football by joining the Buffalo Bills after a successful wrestling career, including a gold medal win in the men’s freestyle super heavyweight wrestling at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
His victory at the Olympics was an exhilarating moment, securing the gold through a remarkable spin-behind takedown with just 10 seconds remaining, followed by another pivotal move as time expired, ultimately winning by one point. Beyond his accomplishments on the wrestling mat, Steveson is a two-time heavyweight National Collegiate Athletic Association champion from the University of Minnesota and has also ventured into professional wrestling with WWE.
His experience and dedication have culminated in a standard three-year rookie contract with the Bills, a team that demonstrated their prowess by clinching the AFC East Division title in the 2023 season. Despite their subsequent loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, Steveson is eagerly anticipating the new challenge that football presents to his exceptional wrestling skills.
In expressing his gratitude, Steveson acknowledges the Buffalo Bills organization, particularly coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, for this incredible opportunity. “I have been fortunate to compete at the highest level of competition in my sport but am looking forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills may translate to football,” Steveson told ESPN. “I am grateful to coach (Sean) McDermott, (general manager) Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organisation for giving me this opportunity.”
