Scottie Scheffler emerges victorious at the Memorial Tournament to secure his fifth championship title of 2024

Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament in a thrilling finish, holding off Collin Morikawa to claim his fifth title of the year. He achieved a remarkable feat by becoming just the second player after Tiger Woods to win the Players Championship, Masters, and Memorial in the same year. The world number one expressed his relief after a challenging final round, stating, “I didn’t do a whole lot well but I did enough to get it done.” Despite the tough conditions, he managed to secure his 11th PGA Tour title, finishing on eight under with a two-over 74.

Scheffler mentioned that he has had some close calls in the tournament, highlighting the difficulty of the golf course. He acknowledged the tough nature of the last few holes, describing them as “brutal” but also expressed his enjoyment of such a demanding test of golf.

This victory served as the perfect preparation for Scheffler, who was the hot favorite to claim his third major at the upcoming US Open at Pinehurst. The challenging day at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village saw Scheffler’s lead dwindle to just two strokes after nine holes, with Morikawa continuing to apply pressure. The victory came down to a dramatic conclusion on the final green, with both players chipping out to around five feet. Ultimately, Scheffler’s composure was evident as he calmly rolled in his putt to seal the win and claim the $4m first prize.

In addition to the thrilling battle between Scheffler and Morikawa, there were impressive performances from other players on the final day. Notably, Adam Hadwin, who had initially been in contention, fell away with a series of bogeys, finishing third on four under. Despite the tough scoring conditions, Matt Fitzpatrick produced a stellar final round, highlighted by six birdies to finish on two under. However, not everyone found success on the challenging course, with Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood both finishing on 2-over-par 290.

Meanwhile, in the LIV Golf Houston event, Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz emerged victorious, claiming his first title on the tour. Ortiz’s strong performance, including a five-under-par 67 in the final round, secured his one-stroke victory over Poland’s Adrian Meronk. This win marked a significant achievement for Ortiz, as he had previously clinched his only PGA Tour title in Houston in 2020. The tournament also saw Spain’s Jon Rahm withdrawing during the second round due to an infection in his left foot, but he is set to compete in the upcoming 124th edition of the event, displaying his determination to overcome adversity and return to the course.
