Cameron Norrie endured a tough defeat in straight sets in the first round of the Rothesay International in Eastbourne. Additionally, Norrie faced a setback at Queen’s earlier this month, falling to Milos Raonic. The challenging run continued for the former British No. 1, who has slipped outside the top 40 after encountering defeats in nine of his previous 15 matches, including early exits at the French Open and Queen’s tournaments. Moreover, Norrie’s unfortunate streak extended to a 7-6 (9) 6-3 loss at the hands of 25-year-old Finn Ruusuvuori. Notably, Norrie, who was ranked eighth in the world just 18 months ago, will commence Wimbledon next week with limited competitive preparation on grass.
In a similar vein, Liam Broady faced an early exit after losing to Yoshihito Nishioka. Broady, who had been sidelined since March due to an ankle issue, succumbed to a 6-3 6-4 defeat in his comeback match. Despite his previous achievements, such as reaching the third round of Wimbledon in the past two years, Broady was unable to secure victory in this instance.
Meanwhile, there were some positive outcomes for other British players. Giles Hussey took advantage of Kei Nishikori’s late withdrawal from the tournament and secured an impressive 6-4 6-2 win over Mariano Navone, claiming his first ATP Tour win. Furthermore, Paul Jubb, who recently received a Wimbledon wild card, achieved his first ATP Tour win with a 6-1 6-2 success over Maximilian Marterer at the Mallorca Championships after progressing through the qualifying rounds.
